Clarke County Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary School

Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary School located at 1150 Oglethorpe Ave. in Athens, Georgia.

Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary School is a replacement for the existing campus that was originally constructed in 1968. The renovation requirements to bring the existing buildings up to meet the instructional and student requirements were not economically feasible, resulting in the demolition of the existing school and constructing a new one.

Several Local Building Committee meetings helped program and form the design of the new Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary School. School faculty and parent input provided feedback to help develop the schematic design – a two story classroom wing on the north and a single story core wing on the front. The new facility houses 43 instructional units with a FTE of 675.

Clarke County School District standards require over-sized classrooms, as well as Flex and Common spaces for overflow/expansion and flexibility of teaching space. Every classroom has an exterior window for natural light.

A centrally located Media Center offers the best views of the site – overlooking the natural woodland that encompasses wetlands.

The HVAC system for the classrooms consists of ducted water-source heat pumps that are accessed from a mezzanine to prevent maintenance disruptions during school hours.
