Lakeside Middle School

This site is adjacent to a residential buffer, which made it a challenge to expand the existing school. It required the construction of a retaining wall into the existing earthen berm.

The solution was to add a two story addition which ran parallel to the existing classroom building. Centering it on the building allowed the school to maintain circulation through the existing central grand staircase. With the addition of two catwalks at the second floor students can easily move between the two buildings. This connection point also provided the opportunity for the design team to create a centrally located learning commons.

The addition consisted of 28 new classrooms, including six Science Labs. Approximately 11,000 sf of the existing building was renovated, including the administration suite and kitchen.
