Winder Elementary School

Several properties around Barrow County were reviewed as possible sites for a new Middle School. Some had close proximity to pipelines and other detrimental items. Water and sewer development costs proved prohibitive for several sites, thus an in-town site was selected that was also large enough to house a much-needed Elementary School.

Our charge was to let the two schools communicate but make them autonomous. Since the school hours did not overlap, it was decided to use a common entrance for the bus drives, that split off to each school. Cars needed to be separated from buses and needed long drives for stacking. This was achieved by moving these drives to the rear off Candler Street.

Since the entire property was developed with the first project (Russell Middle School), grading, storm and other utilities were put in place for both schools, saving money. The City widened roads and ran new water lines to help improve the site.
